Bravellous idea offers firm support to NACCPO
There were no booby prizes for members of a Staffordshire women’s networking group when they donated their unwanted bras to help raise money for a children’s cancer charity.
The business women from the Cannock Wings group got a great deal off their chests to help support NACCPO – the National Alliance of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations.
The charity is made up of parent-run organisations, all with the common aim of working together to support children with cancer, and their families.
Rachael Olley, the Stafford-based operations manager for the charity and a Wings member herself, took along the Bra Bin to the monthly meeting to collect the unwanted under garments, which are recycled and sent to Africa.
She explained that being expensive to produce makes bras too costly for many people in developing countries, and that recycling them is providing a great service to women in the third world.
“We work closely with a company in West Bromwich, BCR Global Textiles, who provide us with the recycling bins, and then pay us according to the weight of the bras that we collect".
“The collections are a little out of the ordinary, and are a great talking point, making the fundraising a bit more of a giggle – there was lots of talk about booby prizes for the largest donation, and what a great idea this was for bosom buddies."
“But behind all of that, people are doing two great things – supporting our charity, and helping women in developing countries who otherwise could not afford to have bras."
“Most women have a bra that they don’t wear anymore, and as they don’t tend to be used by charity shops, they just get thrown away, so this is an ideal way of recycling them.”
“We are now looking for companies willing to have one of our bra bins – we signed up Carthy Crawford Accountants from Stafford at the Wings meeting, and are really grateful for their support – we have many more if businesses want to get in touch with us.”
Carol Garrington, founder and director of Wings, said everyone had been delighted to help out such worthy causes.
“One of the most important things we do at our meetings is keep abreast of what our members are up to, so when Rachael mentioned the Bra Bin, we were more than happy to give it our full support,” she said.
